Video games are now a varsity sport in Hawaii.

The Hawaii High School Esports State Championships happened Tuesday at Iolani School.

It was Roosevelt versus Iolani students as they competed on an esports platforn.

The players competed on League of Legends, which is a multi-player online battle arena video game.

This is new to the state.

KHON2 News spoke with Iolani students who said they fought hard to get esports recognized.

“It’s very exciting. We haven’t really had anything like this here. Gaming is a big part of my life. It’s been a big part of everyone’s lives here. It’s just exciting to have video games represented on a school campus. Never in a million years did I think it would happen.” said, Andy Nakamura, Iolani student.

“People should learn yes esports might to you just be playing video games. in reality it’s a regular sport. You’re competing for something, coming together. It’s a real big thing now. esports maybe 5 years ago might not…but right now we’re drawing in more viewers than the superbowl. it’s pretty cool.” said Frederik Mareels, Iolani student.

Esports is part of the Hawaii State Athletic Association.

Roosevelt won Tuesday’s championship.
