The Hawaii Foodbank is receiving a big donation, thanks to a stamp.
Sue and Bill Gross of Laguna Beach, Calif. recently auctioned off a rare, unused 1851 five-cent Hawaiian Missionary stamp.
The couple decided to donate a portion of the proceeds, $250,000, raised from that auction to the Hawaii Foodbank.
“It’s a rare Hawaiian stamp collection, so they felt it was fitting that part of the proceeds of the sale of the Hawaiian stamps come back to Hawaii,” explained Gerald Shintaku, Hawaii Foodbank president and CEO. “They understood the huge need, the huge issue of hunger here in the islands.”
The donation will help provide 625,000 meals to Hawaii’s hungry.
