Hawaii County breaks ground on Kapiolani Street extension

On Hawaii Island, ground was broke Thursday on a $13.62 million extension of Kapiolani Street that will help ease traffic congestion and improve access to the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

The project will extend Kapiolani Street from Lanikaula Street to Mohouli Street in south Hilo.

The work will include construction of a concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk; a concrete bridge across the Waiakea Stream, drainage improvements, utility relocation, intersection channelization and improvements, installation of traffic signal systems, street lighting, retaining wall construction, property and driveway tie-ins and other related improvements.

The project is scheduled for completion in May 2016.
