HONOLULU (KHON2) — From rain to lightning to thunder and even hail, some Wahiawa residents got to experience a rare phenomenon overnight as mother nature put on a show.

“Usually, I wake up; and I hear, okay, loud rain that’s nothing. Then, I heard the kadunk with the rain, katunk, katunk, katunk. So, I was, like, what is that? Then, my mind kicked in and was like ahh that must be hail.” said Lance Galban, a Wahiawa resident.

Hail was reported falling in Nanakuli and Moanalua, too, leaving residents in disbelief.

“I jumped out of bed; and I ran in the garage and was, like, ho, yeah these are small, little ice. Then, I heard a good size one fall down; and it was an ice cube size. Then, I was, like, ohhh my truck!!” added Galban.

Hawaiian electric reported a brief disruption around 1 a.m. Thursday in Wahiawa. And, at the same time, a lightning strike near the Wahiawa police station.

Meanwhile, for residents who got to see the hail firsthand say it’s an experience they will never forget.

Residents on the west side of Oahu experienced hail starting around midnight.

And throughout the entire island, many got to see a light show by mother nature as thunder and lightning moved over Oahu.

This rare weather event comes just as officials have extended a flood watch for Oahu until Thursday afternoon.

Mahealani Barnes said, “I thought it was kids throwing rocks or someone being mean, until it got harder, we ran outside to see what was going on only to find ice falling everywhere.”
