You see his name as you drive through the tunnels on the H-3 freeway.
He served the state for 52 years. Tetsuo Harano died on Monday.
The Harano Tunnel was named after him
He was the H-3 freeway administrator when the tunnel was built in the 1990’s.
In 2001, Gov. Cayetano renamed the tunnel after former Gov. John Burns.
Harano’s family says he told them not to get upset, but friends and colleagues did get upset. They gathered thousands of signatures and got the tunnel renamed again to the Tetsuo Harano tunnel.
Harano died at his home in Kaimuki at the age of 95.
