A former Honolulu circuit court probation officer was given a second chance Thursday.
Freeman Sasao was granted a deferral of his guilty plea to felony counts of theft and forgery.
From July 1, 2011 through July 9, 2013, Sasao collected 11 payments from various probationers that had been assigned to him and kept the payments for his own use. Sasao then forged receipts to credit the payments to the various probationers.
Sasao, 56, was charged with these offenses in May 2015. He originally pleaded not guilty back then.
Each felony charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Instead, Sasao was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.
