Fire in Maui home stopped by homeowner

Local News

Fire crews responded to a fire on Luawai Street in the Olowalu area of West Maui.

It happened at 4:20 a.m. Friday.

Lahaina firefighters arrived at 4:38 a.m. and found the homeowner had already knocked down the flames in a detached garage of the two-story home. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which was still smoldering within the walls about 10 minutes later.

The homeowner woke up to use the restroom and luckily noticed an orange glow coming from the garage. After confirming it was a fire, the homeowner used a garden hose to stop the fire from spreading, while another family member removed the vehicles from the garage.

Damages were estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $2,000 to its contents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No one was injured.
