Dog mauled to death by hunting dogs on Tantalus

Local News

A Tantalus family is struggling with what it calls a “reckless, senseless” death of a beloved family pet.

The Nielsons told KHON2 what happened to their dog, Foxy, via Report It.

They say she was mauled to death by a pack of hunting dogs that trespassed onto their property. The dogs were hunting for pigs along the popular Moleka trail.

“We could hear a bunch of dogs barking and everything,” said Donald Nielson. “I heard what sounded like one our dogs screaming, an odd sound, so I went outside, saw these pit bulls grabbing her inside our yard.”

Nielson and his family watched in horror as seven hunting pit bulls dragged Foxy, a black Labrador, out of their backyard and toward Moleka Trail, a popular hiking trail just yards away from their property.

Foxy did not make it.

“It just seems reckless and foolish that so many dogs and hunters are allowed on a public trail and in a residential area,” said Kehaulani Nielson.

A special permit is needed in order to hunt on Moleka Trail and hunters must apply in person.

An employee with the Department of Land and Natural Resources, which handles the permits, says no more than 10 permits have been issued.

“All of this is recklessness,” said Sandy Nielson. “This is not right. Who monitors these pig hunters?”

DLNR says they have wildlife managers monitoring and following up on control hunts. There are penalties if poachers, described as non-compliant hunters, are caught.

The Nielsons fear hunting is being done illegally. DLNR says that could be possible and is investigating the situation.

In the meantime, the Nielsons are learning to cope without Foxy.

“We buried Foxy yesterday,” said Kehaulani Nielson. “We had her for 10 years, rescued her from the (Hawaiian) Humane Society. We like to think we gave her 10 years she otherwise would not have.”
