The deadline is nearing if you want health insurance through the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace at the start of the new year.
Dec. 15 is the last day to sign up to avoid a gap in coverage, although open enrollment will continue through Jan. 31, 2016.
Individuals need to re-enroll for continued coverage in 2016 even if they were enrolled in a 2015 ACA plan.
“Typically once we’re on the healthcare.gov system, we’ll be able to start benefiting from renewals, but because Hawaii is transitioning from the Hawaii Health Connector to healthcare.gov this year, we need to get everybody on healthcare.gov as a new applicant,” explained Meredith Nichols, health care outreach manager, state Department of Human Services.
Outreach events will be held on Oahu for those interested in hands-on help.
You’ll need to bring documentation such as a valid passport, I-94, social security number, and proof of income (i.e., pay stubs) if applicable for all household members seeking insurance.
