Chain-reaction crash, ZipperLane damage creates traffic nightmare on H-1

Local News

The Hawaii Department of Transportation has opened the HOV lane to all westbound drivers to alleviate gridlock on the H-1 Freeway.

A crash that occurred at around 12:30 p.m. prompted the closure of two left lanes just after the Waipahu off-ramp, backing up traffic for miles.

According to police, a vehicle appeared to hit the ZipperLane, causing a chain reaction that involved multiple vehicles. No injuries were reported.

HDOT says the crash caused minor damage to the ZipperLane, but a state repair crew was able to push the lane back into position. It will not affect the lane’s next deployment, which will be on Tuesday.

All lanes were reopened just after 4 p.m., but not before creating a traffic nightmare for drivers heading into a busy holiday weekend.
