The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is looking into what caused one of the island’s largest generators to go offline Monday morning.
It happened at around 10:30 a.m. and while power was restored in just 30 minutes, thousands of homes and businesses were affected.
“Today’s outage wasn’t related to the weather or time of day or time of year,” said Jim Kelly, KIUC’s communications manager. “It was not something that you could attribute to. For example, if it was around dinner time, 7 o’clock, or something like that, if there was a big surge in demand.”
KIUC officials say outages of this nature don’t happen very often and the utility had available power at the time.
