Man saved as car bursts into flames in Manoa

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Firefighters responded to reports of a two-alarm building fire in the Manoa area on Jan. 23. around 4:05 p.m.

The fire prompted the closure of Dole Street in both directions between St. Louis Drive and Kanewai Street.

Upon arrival, responders discovered that the fire was a car fire in a detached garage. The second-alarm was then canceled.

KHON spoke with a man on the scene who was inside the car at the time it caught on fire. He says a neighbor and a Good Samaritan were able to pull him out of the car.

KHON headed to the scene and spoke with the homeowner, Howard Sato, whose car caught fire. He said he was sitting in his car when it happened. He had been running his car as he waited for his son when it suddenly burst into flames.

And two Good Samaritans nearby rushed to get him out.

“I really don’t know what happened,” said Sato. “They just came, took me out of the car. They saved my life, that’s it.”

Sato was not hurt.

As for his garage, it’s damaged but his house is okay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
