Big Island police arrest suspect involved in fatal shooting following hours-long standoff

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Police arrested a 32-year-old Puna man who was involved in a fatal shooting that occurred in the Volcano area on Monday, April 26.

Daris Paul Pacheco is being held for suspicion of second-degree murder while police continue their investigation.

At approximately 12:37 p.m., police responded to a residence on Nau Nani Road after they received a report of a victim who had been shot. The suspect was reported to be seen walking from the scene towards a nearby residence.

The Special Response Team tactical unit responded and confirmed the suspect’s presence within the residence. Negotiators initiated contact with the suspect who refused to leave. The suspect exited the residence at around 3:15 p.m. and was taken into custody.

Nearby residents were evacuated for safety concerns. The evacuation has since been lifted.

The identity of the 59-year-old Volcano man is being withheld pending confirmation and notification of the next of kin. There were no other injuries reported during the shooting incident.
