Bicycling visitor robbed, injured in broad daylight

Local News

A brazen daylight robbery caused a visitor from Japan to be dragged from a car in Kailua this week.

It is one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii, but for one Japanese couple it will be a brutal reminder that not everyone in Hawaii shows Aloha.

Witnesses say that just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, three people in a white car were following a Japanese couple who were riding their rented bikes near a popular Lanikai restaurant.

One of the people in the car reached out and grabbed the bag in one of the bike baskets.

The man on the bike wound up getting dragged by the car — which got away.

Police and an ambulance were called by good Samaritans — one of whom also returned the bicycles to the Bike Shop.

EMS says the 28 year-old man was taken to the hospital in serious condition. His wife, while likely traumatized, was not hurt.

We spoke with Bike Shop Kailua general manager Melvin Nakahata.

“I mean the Aloha Spirit should be shown by everyone and unfortunately with this kind of incident it kind of puts a grey cloud over all of the residents here.”

Nakahata says about a year ago, another customer was the victim of an attempted purse snatching — also in Lanikai.

No business that serves visitors wants to sour their experience in advance, by warning about horrible crimes that could happen.

However, from now on, Nakahata says they may more strongly encourage visitors who rent bikes — to take advantage of free lockers the store offers.

“I think we’re going to offer the use of the lockers as a cautionary measure, just to let people know that it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii has offered help to the couple.

They tell us the man was released from the hospital today and that he and his wife will return home tomorrow.

We’ve asked whether the two would ever consider returning to the islands — and we have yet to receive a response.
