Army divers are working to retrieve an abandoned fishing vessel at Honolulu Harbor.

The 77-foot Judy K was first reported to be sinking at Pier 16 back in January. Ropes preventing the boat from sinking to the bottom of the harbor.

The state Department of Transportation sought a contractor to remove it, but the bids came in well over budget.

So officials are working with Army divers from the 7th Engineer Dive Detachment, 130th Engineer Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command to lift and remove the vessel.

The Army says the salvage provides a training opportunity for the divers and can be balanced against their mandated mission set.

Divers also inspected the condition of the vessel back in June.

Work is expected to be completed by Oct. 2.
