After-Christmas shoppers pack stores for returns, sales

Almost half of the consumers polled in a National Retail Federation survey said they would shop in stores the week after Christmas, and many of them did on Saturday.

Most are using gift cards, or returning items they got for Christmas.

Many stores closed Friday for Christmas, but on Saturday, they were happy to welcome customers back.

Offering one day sales, or clearance prices to move out the winter stock.

Shoppers at Pearlridge center tell me they came to the mall to return items and check out the deals.

Amber Maeshiro Moreira was returning items.

“I work today so might as well just get it over with,” said Moreira.

The mall was busy, and the parking lot was even busier.

“Its crazy, especially the parking upstairs we have to park so far away,” saud customer Kelcy Spencer.

“We entered through the uptown at Macy’s and we kept circling, so we probably stayed there a good 20 minutes just trying to find parking,” Moreira added.

In Kailua, some small businesses also marked down items up to 50 percent off.

An employee at the boutique Sand People tells me a lot of people have been stopping by to exchange their gift cards for something fun, and they expected more people in the afternoon.

“With the weather we have had a few more people, than normal because people weren’t able to go to the beach this morning,” said employee Marianne Schultz.

In addition to the returns, a recent survey by American Express showed more than half of Americans plan to re-gift something this holiday season.
