The 50th State Fair kicks off this weekend at Aloha Stadium and runs through June 26.
Arguably one of the biggest changes this year is how you pay. The fair is introducing a “Fun Pass” system that replaces coupons with a single card.
“What you do is when you come to the fair, you can use cash or credit card, insert it into a machine, and it will dispense a Fun Pass that has as many credits on it as you select,” explained Donna Smith, E.K. Fernandez Shows vice president. “You just tap it and if you have enough credits, there’s a light that turns green. If you don’t have enough credits, there’s a light that turns red.”
Highlights include the Anastasini Circus, which features high-wire performers, aerial acts, costume magic, and illusions by performers from Italy, Russia, Mexico, Columbia, Bulgaria, and the U.S. After each show, the audience is invited to come to the circus ring to meet and take photos with the performers.
A new ride called the Equinox provides riders with controlled flips while rotating 50 feet above the ground.
“It feels like you’re almost like in a fighter jet, going in all directions. You never know which way you are,” said Kyle Wisdom, general manager of Laser Fair Inc. “It gets so tall, you get a great view of the surrounding area.”
On Memorial Day, May 30, free admission will be available for active and retired military personnel and their families with valid military ID as part of Pasha Hawaii Military Appreciation Day.
