100,000 gallons of wastewater overflow in Kahului

Local News

The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of approximately 100,000 gallons occurred on March 13 in Kahului.

It was stopped by 7:45 a.m.

The overflow was caused by an equipment malfunction at the Kaa Pump Station. Maui Electric power was lost at the pump station and county backup pumps failed to run.

The wastewater flowed along the side of Amala Road with a portion entering an area with restricted access to the public on Alahoa Road.

The overflow did not reach any waterway. Standing water was removed, the area disinfected and the Department of Health was notified.
