The man who died following a motor vehicle crash in Central Oahu has been identified.
He was Jimmie Dorsey Jr., 65, of Mililani.
The accident happened around 3:05 p.m. Thursday along a two-mile stretch of Kamehameha Highway near Wheeler Army Airfield.
According to police, it began with a minor collision near Higgins Road, when an SUV hit a pickup truck at a slow rate of speed.
“Both vehicles pulled off to the side of the road and before the driver of the pickup truck could get out, the SUV driver pulled back into the roadway and fled the scene,” said Lt. Carlene Lau of the Honolulu Police Department.
The SUV picked up speed and when it reached 70 mph, “both the pickup truck and the witness vehicle pulled back because it was too dangerous to continue following,” Lau said.
The witness saw the SUV continue down the highway, through a coned-off section of the road, and slam into the back of a GP Roadway Solutions truck near Waikalani Drive. “They were parked and they were staged ready to pick up the cones,” Lau said.
Dorsey, who was driving the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Police say the crash also injured a man, reported to be in his early 30s, who was in the back of the truck. He was hospitalized in critical condition with severe leg injuries.
Police say speed was a factor in the crash and any impairments will be determined during an autopsy and toxicology report.
