Hooko LLC – Child Sexual Abuse

HONOLULU (KHON2) - Hooko LLC has a mission, “Fulfilling Lives Through Counseling for Individuals, Couples & Families” .

On Living808 we discussed Child Sexual Abuse and it is defined as any interaction between a child and an adult or an older child, that engages the child in sexual stimulation, and that demonstrates a clear power differential.

This could include exposing oneself, asking the child to undress, touching, kissing, fondling, rubbing, oral sex, or any type of penetration.

Co-founders Edwina Reyes and Rhesa Kaulia also told us who the most common perpetrators are.

“Majority of them are males (a small percentage of females) that are known and trusted by the children and their parents – i.e. family members, neighbors, babysitters, coaches, etc., and they often begin the abuse with a “grooming” process.”

Perpetrators are also known for “grooming” their victims.

“Grooming” is a process in which the perpetrator will prepare the child for the sexual abuse.

This could take weeks, months, or even years.

The perpetrator will build a relationship and create an emotional connection with the child, by convincing the child they want to help or mentor them, that they are in a loving romantic relationship, and most importantly, that they can be trusted.

They may even buy costly gifts or items that perhaps a parent can’t afford or won’t buy the child.

The sinister thing about grooming is that it often mimics positive relationships, and so is often not recognized as being malicious.

The impact of the abuse is staggering, often lasting the rest of their lives.

As a parent Reyes and Kaulia have great advice.

“First and foremost, be involved in your child’s life, and get to know the people that they interact with.  Secondly, BELIEVE YOUR CHILD if they report something.  The worst thing you can do is not believe them or minimize things,  Also, take them to the Doctor for examination, file a police report, and get them into therapy with someone who specializes in working with abuse and trauma.  Our Counseling Center provides services for these types of situations.  Often people don’t realize that counseling services are covered by most major health insurances.  If you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact our office at 808-375-7712 or visit us online at https://www.hookollc.com."
