Kalihi Waena Elementary School celebrates Reading and Dr. Seuss

Every year, the nation celebrates reading and literacy on Read Across America Day.

One of the local schools holding special reading events is Kalihi Waena Elementary School.

The school’s Read Across America celebration started back in the mid 2000’s as a “Books and Breakfast” program.

Books were placed on the tables each morning for the kids and families to read and enjoy during breakfast.

Once a year, students and their families were treated a breakfast sponsored by Sodexo.

In the years following, the Coast Guard got involved by providing their helicopter and boat for our students to tour, and their Coast Guard personnel came and started to read to our students.

The celebration then got bigger and was open to outside community partnerships where it has evolved into a week-long celebration honoring famous author, Dr. Seuss.

Readers from various community partners come to Kalihi Waena to read to our students and share about their careers.

Teachers hope is to expose students to as many career opportunities as possible by the readers sharing their love of reading and the success of their careers.

Local business Sodexo has been involved from the start and provides a spectacular lunch for all of our volunteer readers and community volunteers.
