Hawaii Island Week: Hawaii Wildlife Center

KHON2’s Wake Up 2day and Living808 present a special series from the Island of Hawaii. Trini Kaopuiki went exploring and found the joys of a staycation on Hawaii’s largest island.

Kapaau on Hawaii Island is home to the only Native Hawaiian wildlife hospital and response facility in the state. Hawaii Wildlife Center specializes in the care of more than 70 different species and subspecies of native birds and the Hawaiian hoary bat.

According to president and center director Linda Elliott, Hawaii is the endangered species and extinction capital, so it’s important that we have a facility that is qualified to take in sick and injured native wildlife.

If you find injured wildlife, Elliott says to call the center or visit their website for help. No matter what island you’re on, they’re happy to help.

HWC also has many volunteer opportunities. Rescue team help is needed on all islands (drivers and pilots). If you’re interested, visit their website to see all opportunities available to get involved and support HWC.Related Links:
