Hawaii Community College program gives back to families on the Hawaii Island

Building skills and building community: that’s the purpose of a unique project that happens each year at Hawaii Community College on the Big Island. Every year students from the construction trades programs at Hawaii CC design, build and landscape a high-quality, affordable custom home for a Native Hawaiian family in Hilo. Last month the college hosted a dedication ceremony for the 48th home built by Hawai’i CC students since the project began a half-century ago.

Taizo got to sit down with Matt Okuno, a recent Hawaii CC graduate who designed what will soon become the next home that students build, and also Joel Tanabe, a faculty member who has been involved in the project for many years.

Hawai’i Community College has locations in Hilo and Kona. For anyone looking to enroll for this fall the application deadline is August 1st. You can go to hawaii.hawaii.edu to learn more about the programs that are offered and how to apply.

Apply by August 1st for the Fall 2015 semester
