Fun activities and exercises for seniors at the Plaza Assisted Living

The Plaza Assisted Living has been working with aging populations for more than 20 years!  Today, they are celebrating National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

They joined us in studio to talk about a variety of activities and exercises that can keep seniors’ minds, bodies and souls strong. They’ll even showed us their hula burn exercise!

According to Tricia Medeiros, COO of The Plaza Assisted Living, in addition to being enjoyable, regular physical activity can help seniors to prevent disease and reduce risk factors associated with disease, illness, and injury. It can also improve balance, muscle strength, and emotional and psychological well-being. With Hawaii’s aging population rapidly increasing, they feel this is a relevant issue that can improve the health of our communities.

Here are a few examples of activities and exercises they offer:

  • Tai Chi – effective in treating arthritis, maintaining flexibility
  • Zumba- always a very popular activity at all of The Plaza locations.
  • Post-Injury Physical Therapy – Led by physical therapist and owner of PTWorks, Suzie Neufeldt
  • Hula Burn for Seniors (a fitness program exclusive to The Plaza Assisted Living) – led by founder and instructor, Nicole (Kahealani) Enos.  Currently, Hula Burn for Seniors is taught EXCLUSIVELY at The Plaza. The program is offered at their Punchbowl and Pearl City locations. They hope to offer the program at all Plaza locations soon.

The Plaza Assisted Living currently has 4 communities:  Punchbowl, Mililani, Moanalua and Pearl City. Their 5th location will open in Waikiki this Fall.
