Which type of air conditioner is right for you?

Energy Innovations

Selecting the right air conditioning unit can help you keep your home cool without breaking the bank.

David Gorman, President and General Manager of RevoluSun Smart Home, provides us tips on choosing the right one for you.

First is to understand the types of residential air conditioners available.

There are three categories: window AC’s, split AC’s, and central air conditioning.

The second tip is to know your budget.

A window AC is a good solution for someone who wants a low cost and who doesn’t mind paying higher operating costs on an ongoing basis.

Gorman provides an example to help us understand the difference in costs.

“You could get a  new 12,000 BTU unit for $350, but it’ll cost more than twice as much per month to operate than a split system,” Gorman explained.

“We’re talking $230 a month to run a single air window air conditioner 24/7. If you only run your AC for a few hours here and there or during one season out of the year,  and you don’t mind the noise, a window AC makes economic sense.”

And lastly, understand that central air conditioners are not a “one-size-fit-all-solution”.

When it comes to central air conditioners, you don’t have control over individual room temperatures.

“There’s a lot of waste, especially if there’s only one person home during the day,” Gorman said.

He encourages folks interested in central air to look into a Mitsubishi split air conditioning system which he says can save you up to 40% on ongoing electricity costs.

If you run your AC all the time or need to replace an old central system, call Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer RevoluSun at (808) 748-8888 to schedule a free estimate for split air conditioning.
