HONOLULU (KHON2) — The state has expanded COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to qualified individuals in phase 1C, with kupuna age 60 and older being eligible for the vaccine as of March 29. Here is everything you need to know about how and where to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Vaccines are currently being distributed in tiers. The distribution layout is as follows:

  • Phase 1A: Frontline essential healthcare workers and long‐term care facility residents.
  • Phase 1B: Frontline essential workers and adults 75 years of age and older.
  • Phase 1C: Adults between the age of 60 and 74 years old, Persons aged 16 and older with high-risk medical conditions and essential workers who were not recommended for vaccination in Phase 1B.
  • Phase 2: All persons over the age of 16 who were not previously recommended for vaccination.

The state is set to expand to Phase 1C of the vaccine distribution plan.

At this time, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine has FDA approval for use in people 16 years old and older and the Moderna vaccine has FDA approval for use in people 18 years old and older.

Current qualifications for a COVID-19 vaccine:

  • Be between the ages of 60 and 74 years old.
  • Be a person aged 16 or older with a high-risk medical condition.*
  • Be an essential worker.**
  • Adults who qualify under phase 1A and 1B may still be eligible for COVID-19 vaccination, but priority will be given to individuals in phase 1C.
  • Certain healthcare facilities may require proof of insurance. Contact your healthcare provider for more information.

*Under DOH guidelines, high-risk medical conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • End stage renal disease that requires dialysis.
  • Lung or heart disease that is severe enough to require current oxygen treatment.
  • People who receive IV medication infusions for cancer or other conditions.

**Essential workers are people in industries and occupations important to the functioning of society and have an increased risk of exposure due to their jobs.

The following Phase 1C essential workers are currently qualified for the vaccine:

  • Hotel and hospitality workers
  • Food service workers
  • Bar workers
  • Essential workers already qualified under phase 1A and phase 1B: First responders, corrections officers and staff, emergency services dispatchers, individuals essential for federal, state and local government operations, critical transportation infrastructure workers (harbor, dock workers, public transportation, etc.), critical utilities workers (energy, water, etc.), teachers, childcare and educational support staff (preschool, K-12, post-secondary, etc.), US Postal Service employees and grocery store workers.

Other essential workers not mentioned above are currently not eligible to book their appointment and are being asked by the Department of Health to wait until called upon.

Facilities administering COVID-19 vaccines may be unable to register new/certain applicants due to limited supply or lack of appointment availability. Please contact the participating facility or check their website for the most up-to-date information.

Hawaii Pacific Health

Queenʻs Health Systems/ Queen’s Medical Center

  • For phase 1C, Queen’s is only expanding vaccine eligibility to those 60 and older, adults with high risk medical conditions, hotel, restaurant and bar employees. At this time, all other industries in the 1C category are not eligible to book their appointment and must wait until they are called on.

Kaiser Permanente

  • Vaccine eligibility available to kupuna 60 and older.

  • Expanding eligibility to all individuals in phase 1C and those 65 years old and older.
  • Vaccine eligibility available to agricultural/food workers as well as construction workers.

  • Administering vaccines to people 65 years old and older, those with pre-existing conditions and Hawaii hospitality industry workers only.
  • Vaccines administered at War Memorial Gymnasium (700 Halia Nakoa Street).

Beginning Monday, April 5, those in Phase 2 of the Hawaii State Department of Health’s vaccination plan will be eligible.

Phase 2 includes the following groups:

  • 16 years and older (Pfizer)
  • 18 years and older (Moderna and Johnson & Johnson)
  • Phase 1A, 1B, and 1C will also continue to be vaccinated.

Department of Health

  • Beginning April 5, the Hawaii District Health Office is vaccinating residents 18 years and older (Moderna and Johnson & Johnson), as well as those in Phase 1A, 1B, 1C, and 2.
  • Residents may register by completing an online survey here or by calling (808) 300-1120, Monday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hamakua Kohala Health

  • Beginning April 5, Hamakua Kohala Health is vaccinating residents 16 years and older (Pfizer) and 18 years and older (Moderna and Johnson & Johnson).

  • Beginning April 5, Kaiser Permanente is vaccinating residents in Phase 1A, 1B, 1C, and 2. This includes individuals 18 years and older (Moderna).

  • Beginning April 5, KCH Vaccine Clinic is vaccinating residents 16 years and older (Pfizer).

  • Beginning April 5, KTA is vaccinating residents 18 years and older (Moderna), including those in Phases 1A, 1B, and 1C.
  • Due to the high demand, there is a waiting list. Those on the list will be contacted to schedule an appointment when the vaccine is available.

Kauai County

Kauai Residents Age 16-17

All Kauai residents age 16 and older are now eligible for Pfizer vaccine appointments. The vaccines manufactured by Moderna and Johnson & Johnson have FDA emergency use authorization for people only age 18 or older at this time.

DOH Clinic at the War Memorial Convention Hall

  • All residents age 18 or older can make an appointment now for the vaccine clinic at the War Memorial Convention Hall.
  • To sign up, complete the Kauai District Health Office COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation Survey. After completing the survey, you will receive an email with instructions on how to register your account and schedule your appointment.
  • The Department of Health added an additional clinic date for the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine on April 5 at the War Memorial Convention Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. If additional Johnson & Johnson vaccine is received, the clinic hours will be extended to 1 p.m. Clinic dates for the two-dose Moderna vaccine continue to operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Kaiser Permanente Clinic

  • Appointments are available at the Kaiser Permanente Lihue Clinic. You do NOT have to be a Kaiser member to make an appointment there. 
  • Appointments at the Kaiser Permanente Lihue Clinic are currently limited to residents age 60 or older, essential workers, and individuals with high-risk medical conditions.
  • Both members and non-members can sign up for a vaccine appointment here.
  • The clinic will be open by appointment Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Longs Clinics

  • Appointments at CVS/Longs are currently limited to residents age 60 or older, essential workers, and individuals with high-risk medical conditions.
  • Appointments can be made at Longs Drugs locations in Lihue, Eleele, Koloa, and Kapaa.

Safeway Clinics

  • Appointments at Safeway are currently limited to residents age 60 or older, essential workers, and individuals with high-risk medical conditions.

What to bring with you to your COVID-19 vaccine appointment:

  • Government-issued picture I.D.
  • Insurance Card.
  • Mask/Face Covering. This must be worn at all times.
  • Copy of your appointment confirmation.
  • If you require assistance, you may bring one person with you to escort you for your vaccination appointment. This person must be 18 years or older.
