Honolulu Mayor urging residents not to gather for Thanksgiving

HONOLULU (KHON2) — New COVID-19 cases remained in the triple digits this past weekend.

With Thanksgiving just days away, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is urging people not to gather in big groups for the holiday.

He joined Wake Up 2day with more.

Biden order to help Hawaii renters, but expert requests more assistance

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Of the 17 executive orders that President Biden signed on his first day of office Wednesday, an extension on the federal moratorium on evictions until the end of March will have a large impact on Hawaii's propped-up rental market.

The order is longer than the state's moratorium, which is set to expire on February 14th. So far, Governor David Ige hasn't said if he'll extend that date, but according to the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization, rental delinquency has quadrupled and an estimated 30,000 households are behind on rent.

Stimulus debit cards on the way and scammers are aware

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Scammers are always looking for ways to trick people into giving out their personal information, but the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) advises it will not be calling people about the stimulus debit card.

Roughly 8 million pre-paid debit cards were mailed out to qualifying Americans since Friday, Jan. 15, as part of the federal aid prompted by the pandemic. The Visa debit card shows the stars of the flag and will come in an envelope with "Economic Income Payment" written on it.
