If you’re looking to file an insurance claim for weather-related damage to your property, experts have a warning for you. Some scammers are closely monitoring areas impacted by severe weather to target their next victims.
Lisa Nakao of Hawaii’s Better Business Bureau explains how these scammers will pose as a contractor in areas recovering from damaging weather. They’ll use a real company’s name and market their services.
The scammer will act as the middle man between you and the contracting company then take the money and run.
Nakao says, “They’ll fly out or they’ll move to that locality temporarily to go out door to door and market aggressively.”
To prevent falling victim to this type of insurance fraud, Nakao suggests verifying where your money is going.
