TALK OF THE TOWN—QUEEN THEATER KAIMUKI
at

CELEBRATE KAIMUKI KANIKAPILA
9AM -3PM SATURDAY NOVEMBER 7

It’s the “ Talk of the Town” in Kaimuki again, just as it was on opening night in 1936.

The Queen Theater slogan was first published in the Honolulu Advertiser as part of the campaign for the new “State of the Art” venue at the corner of Waialae and Center streets.

And it’s alive again.

With formation of the Friends of Queen Theater in 2008, a non-profit group working to protect the theater’s history and return her to community use, Honolulu is again talking about the grand 74-year-young theater and what will become of it.

As part of the Celebrate Kaimuki Kanakapila event on Saturday Nov. 7, the Friends will be manning their Talk Story booth to hear people’s memories of gala evenings, Saturday matinees, and live performances like the Rocky Horror Show at the Queen. Storytellers can sit down for a rest from the fair to have their oral stories, or write down those fond and quirky memories to add to the Queen’s history.

If you don’t have a story to share then sign up to be a Friend of Queen Theater where membership is free and open to anyone who sees this historical building as a cornerstone for the new Kaimuki. Sign on if you don’t want to watch another Varsity Theatre turned to rubble. The Queen – named for Liliuokalani - is one of the last historical theaters left in Honolulu.

Designated since 2006 as one of Honolulu’s Most Endangered Historic Sites on a joint list by Historic Hawaii and the State Historic Preservation Division, many people don’t know that the 850-seat theater was a venue for not only movies but live performances.

How cool will it be someday to have a great meal at one of Kaimuki’s new restaurants and then saunter down the street to the New Queen Theater for a special film or concert. Isn’t it time to make new memories at the Queen.
