Athlete of the Week:Keone Reyes

By John Veneri

There were very few who gave kaimuki any realistic chance of winning the boys state basketball tournament last week.

And yet...that's exactly what they did...taking down two ILH teams and two-seeded teams "en route" to the title.

Senior forward Keone Reyes was the guy who gave the bulldogs their bite...exemplifying their "fight to the end" mentality while averaging 24-points over the last two games.

John Veneri talked with the latest selection, for KHON2's Athlete of the Week.

Named the Division 1 tournament's most outstanding player and well deserving...

Keone Reyes dominated the opposition with soft touch from outside and physical toughness in the paint.

The Kaimuki senior would not be denied, scoring 27 points against Kamehameha of the Big Island in the semis.

And racking up 21 points and 7 rebounds in the championship against top seed Punahou...despite being in foul trouble late in the first half.

During his career and especially when he needed a little extra something in his game. Reyes didn't turn anywhere but up, his mother past away following his freshman season and with her on his mind Reyes found inner strength.

Basketball is but a memory now. Reyes will go back to playing football at San Jose City college but his goal is to someday play for the UH Warriors.

Congratulations to Kaimuki and to Keone Reyes...our KHON2 Athlete of the Week.
