Athlete of the Week

Athlete of the Week: Lauri Hakala

By John Veneri

The warrior volleyball team is currently on a four match win streak and really starting to climb out of the cellar they were in at the start of the season.

One of the team leaders and seniors who had one of his best weekends as a warrior is our selection of the KHON2 Athlete of the Week.

His intensity on the court, even in practice is unmatched. Senior Lauri Hakala is a vocal leader for the warriors but more importantly the 2006 All American leads by example.

This past weekend in two sweeps over Lewis, Hakala served up 11 aces, eight in Fridays match alone. One shy of the school record of 9 set by Costas Theocharidis in 2002.

Hakala's journey is an incredible one...an all star in high school. Hakala joined the Finnish Army. It was on a recon mission in the artic circle that he got the call to fullfill a dream to play for the Warriors. He'll be a 3 and a half year senior and graduate in December. But his reasoning behind all his good fortune is simple.

He speaks 4 languages fluently and can understand another 5 including Hawaiian and Hakala has his life after UH mapped out.

For now Hakala and the rest of the Warriors are trying to get back to the postseason one match at a time.

Congratulations to Lauri Hakala...our KHON2 Athlete of the Week.
