Athlete of the Week

Athlete of the Week: Derrick Low

By Kanoa Leahey

He helped lead a resurgent washington state basketball team to 26-wins. The most for the program since 1941.

He averaged a team-high 17 points in two NCCA tournament games last week. One, a win over oral roberts in the opening round of the big dance, the other, a season ending loss to Vanderbilt.

Either way, hoopin' on the biggest stage in college ball, well-deserving of recognition which is why Derrick Low is this week's
Athlet of the Week.

This past season was a "coming out party" of sorts for Low.

After struggling with a foot fracture in each of his first two seasons at Wazzu. The Iolani grad reinvented himself for his junior campaign.

Growing out his doo, tattooing his leg and becoming an all-Pac-10 performer.

If by "well" he means leading his team in scoring, and helping to boost the Cougars to their first ever top ten ranking at one point this year, then yeah one could say he did well.

The icing on the cake was crashing the big dance party for the first time since 1994. Ultimately giving Low a chance to flash his game for the college hoops world.

But not too proud.

Derrick's quick to turn the attention to the future, and what will be his senior year.

Another form of motivation, the D-Low supporters back here in the islands.

Derrick...they were.

Congratulations to Derrick Low, our KHON2 Athlete of the Week.
