Athlete of the Week

Athlete of the Week: Carissa Moore

By John Veneri

Finally tonight...there were so many to choose from, state wrestling had a number of fantastic individual performances. But this week we dive in and honor a 14 year-old surfer who rewrote the history books this past week in Austrailia.

Carissa Moore faced and beat some of the best in the first Roxy Pro tour event of the year and it's her historic ride to the finals that earned to honor of the khon2 athlete of the week.

After winning several qualifying events, the Punahou 9th grader earned a spot in the first asp tour event of 2007.

At first though, her expectations weren't real high.

But after beating 7 time work champion Layne Beachley for the second time in a week to advance, goals started to change. She then beat fellow local girl and former world ranked number two Megan Abubo. Then ASP Rookie of the Year Rebecca Woods to make it to the finals.

Moore became the youngest surfer in history, male or female to win a wildcard into a major world championship tour event and reach the finals. She lost in that championship round but her run to the finals was something she'll never forget.

Congratulations to Carissa Moore...our KHON2 Athlete of the Week.
