Myanmar Cyclone Death Toll Could Top 10,000

By KHON News

The country of Myanmar is in shambles after a deadly cyclone.

The state says 4,000 people died in the disaster.

But its foreign minister fears the death toll could reach 10,000.

Hundreds of thousands more are homeless and missing.

The cyclone left a trail of disaster across Myanmar, the country known to most of the world as Burma.

The government says has taken thousands of lives.

Although an exact death toll can't be confirmed, the immediate effect of cyclone is described by an American diplomat in Burma.

"There's no electricity. Very limited communications. Water is lacking in many neighborhoods. After about noon, the sky cleared and everybody came out and were just stunned. People on my compound who had been there for about 15 years say they had not seen anything like this here, ever,” said U.S. Diplomat, Shari Villarosa.

the destruction is so intense, some experts estimate there could be more than one-hundred-thousand people left homeless.
jens orback, a former swedish cabinet member, was there when the cyclone hit.

"We heard the big bangs and then I looked out on the balcony, I couldn't stand there, but I saw things coming down from the roof, trees were falling which have stood there for a long time. And in our hotel, the ceiling came in with glass and the lights and it turned black,” said Jens Orback, former Swedish Cabinet Minister.

Burma has been under military by the "Junta" rule since 1962.

A group historically opposed to taking aid from outside organizations is accepting help from other countries for this major catastrophe.

With aid coming in from other countries, the clean and rebuilding work begins.
