Three NYPD Detectives Acquitted in Shooting Death of Sean Bell

By KHON News

A judge finds the three NYPD detectives not guilty in the 2006 shooting death of Sean Bell.

Detectives Gescard Isnora and Michael Oliver were facing up to 25 years in prison for the shooting.

Detective Marc Cooper was looking at a reckless endangerment charge.

"I'd like to say sorry to the Bell family for the tragedy," said Cooper.

The verdict was received with mixed emotions.

Supporters of Sean Bell's family and friends, gathered outside the courthouse, stunned by the outcome.

Bell's fiancé walked out of the courtroom after the verdict was read.

Family members also left, going straight to Sean Bell's grave where they prayed.

A local NAACP leader says the verdict does not follow the rule of law.

"This case was not about justice, this case is about police officers having the right to act above the law. If the law is in effect here and the judge followed the law truly, these officers would have been found guilty," said Leroy Gadsen, NAACP member.

"What we saw in court today was not a miscarriage of justice. Justice didn't miscarry. This was an abortion of justice. Justice was aborted,” said Reverend Al Sharpton.

Bell was gunned down outside of a strip club in Queens after his bachelor party.

The 23-year-old and his friends were involved in a scuffle.

The detectives were working undercover at the time and say one of the men in Bell's group said he had gun.

The three detectives fired a combined 50 shots at Bell's car, after the group tried to take off.

The detectives say they thought Bell was going for a gun.

Bell was unarmed and no gun was ever found at the scene.

Queens District Attorney, Richard Brown, said, "Judge cooper discharged his responsibilities fairly and conscientiously under the law and I accept his verdict and I urge certainly that all fair-minded people in this city do the same."

After the detectives were acquitted, the Department of Justice said it will review this matter.

And look into a possible violation of the victim's civil rights.
