For the past 16 days, visitors were turned away at the USS Arizona Memorial.
The same thing will continue Thursday.
While there's been no official word, the workers KHON2 spoke with say certain arrangements need to be made before it can welcome the thousands of visitors who come in daily. An announcement will be made Thursday morning.
It's better news for those who want to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. A spokeswoman says it reopened at 6 a.m. Thursday. And while not all of the attractions might be ready, most of them will.
"At least some of the more popular areas like the Thurston Lava Tubes and the steam vents and the observation deck that overlooks the Maumau Crater from the Jaggar Museum," Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Public Affairs Officer Jessica Ferracane said.
Ferracane says the 129 workers who were furloughed are eager to get back on the job.
"It's just been very strange and surreal to have to turn people away at the entrance station, we are very much looking forward to welcoming people back to the national park," Ferracane said.
She says the partial shutdown has been a huge economic loss not just for the park, but to all the businesses surrounding it such as the tour companies and the hotels. It's estimated that Volcanoes National Park attracts 4,500 visitors a day. It contributes about $265,000 to the local economy.
"So if you do that math, 4,500 times 16. That's 72,000 people that have not been able to see the national park and that also has resulted in that lost revenue of $4.2 million or probably even higher," Ferracane said.
So it's not just the furloughed federal workers who are happy that the shutdown is over. There were also more than 200 workers laid off by the surrounding businesses because the park was closed.
"From Volcano House and Kilauea Military Camp and Volcano Art Center and so on that are either out of work or are otherwise impacted by the closure of the park, so it's been a really big deal, it hurts," Ferracane said.
Traffic investigators have cleared the scene of a deadly early morning crash in Pearl City. Just after 1 a.m. Friday morning, police say a motorcycle crashed into a parked car along Kaahumanu Street.
When a plane crashes into the ocean, people can increase their chances of survival by keeping in mind a few simple things.
One of the survivors in a plane crash off Molokai was determined to get everyone out and into their life vests, even swimming a half mile to shore to flag down help.
