The state will kick off a series of meetings to discuss proposed rules to increase food safety.
Among other things, the state wants to require more training for restaurant workers and the ability to refuse permit renewal to businesses which don't pay fines.
A public hearing will be held at the Environmental Health Services Division Food Safety Education Room 99-945 Halawa Valley St., Aiea 96701 at 2 p.m. Monday. More meetings will be held across the islands throughout the week.
The measures come in the wake of recent outbreak of hepatitis A and Salmonella.
The State Health Department closed all the Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and Kauai because of the hepatitis A outbreak which infected nearly 300 people with more than 70 requiring hospitalization.
The in November 2016, Marine Agrifuture in Kahuku, also known as Olakai Hawaii, was ordered to immediately cease and desist selling or distributing their products, Kahuku Ogo, Robusta Ogo, and Sea Asparagus due to reports of Salmonella infections linked to the consumption of ogo (or limu). Fourteen cases were confirmed among children and adults, four of which required hospitalization.
The Hawaii State Department of Health will hold public hearings on Hawaii Island, Maui, Oahu, and Kauai from Dec. 5-9 to introduce amendments to the Hawaii Administrative Rules Title 11, Chapter 50, Food Safety Code, which outlines standards for all food establishments statewide.
The department is also proposing the adoption of the 2013 FDA Model Food Code. This will provide Hawaii with the most current nationally recognized food code based on the latest scientific knowledge on food safety.Click here for the draft rules.
Written public comments are recommended and may be submitted at the public hearings or to the Sanitation Branch at 99-945 Halawa Valley St., Aiea, Hawaii 96701 prior to the close of business on Friday, Dec. 16.
