From the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, with about 3,000 workers furloughed, the local economy is already taking a major loss.
"About $2.5 million a day it adds to our economy, so having a shutdown like this does have a significant impact," University of Hawaii economics professor Denise Konan said.
The impact is also significant for the tourism industry, with the Arizona Memorial, Volcanoes National Park, and Haleakala closed to the public.
"They're each losing about $15,000 a day in just the ticket sales that are coming in. And you think about each of the workers that work there being on furlough for that period of time and the numbers start to add up," Konan said.
Add in the businesses affected by these popular tourist destinations, along with a total of 25,000 furloughed workers tightening their budget, the losses can be staggering.
"Easily, it's in the tens of millions," Konan said.
Blame it on Congress. Although, political experts say Hawaii's congressional delegates being all Democrats are relatively unscathed.
"I suspect that they'll continue to be outspoken in their opposition to it and this will probably play fairly well politically for them," University of Hawaii political science professor Colin Moore said.
But if the shutdown has a long-term economic impact, political pundits say the Democrats in office will take a hit come Election Day.
"If they do not take corrective action then you can see replacements. Not Republicans replacing Democrats, but other Democrats replacing current democratic office holders," said John Hart, Hawaii Pacific University Communications Department Chairperson.
Everyone KHON2 has spoken with says if this goes on past two weeks, the economic impact gets much deeper because it trickles down to everyone.
Thousands gathered at the memorial to pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to those who survived.
You may remember the story we did earlier this week about the Pearl Harbor survivor who was headed here from the mainland for the ceremony, he was bumped from the flight and didn't know if he would get here in time.
It may take drivers a little longer to get around this weekend. On Sunday, there will be lane and road closures for the Honolulu Marathon.
