A coalition is hoping to make streets safe for pedestrians and bicyclists, not just for drivers.
To help get a better understanding of the road dangers, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell conducted a "Walk Audit," which evaluates the ability of the streetscape to accommodate the mobility needs of the public.
"It puts our mayor and his department heads and our community on the street. Because when you are a driver in the car you see the street differently," said Barbara Kim Stanton, AARP Hawaii.
"Going forward we're looking to put in five million dollars in the D.T.S. Budget so they can move more quickly with some of these issues to make our streets safer," City Councilmember Breene Harimoto said.
It's all part of legislation passed last year by the City Council called, "Complete Streets."
It includes upgrading sidewalks, crosswalks, and accessible curb ramps, as well as creating bicycle lanes.
