Authorities reopened a beach on Maui's north shore Friday, one day after a shark attacked a kitesurfer.
State officials say they searched the area around Ka'a Beach in Kanaha Friday morning. They say they spotted a large shark just before 8 a.m., but didn't see it again. Officials reopened the beach at about 12 p.m.
On Thursday, a man in his 40s was rushed to the hospital after officials say a large tiger shark bit him in the calf.
He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
Sources tell KHON2 that state Department of Health Director Loretta Fuddy died in a plane crash off Molokai.
The owner of Makani Kai Air says the plane that crashed off Molokai had engine failure.
Loretta Fuddy devoted 30 years to the health and human services industry.
