KHON2's Action Line is being credited with helping to bring a Nanakuli man to justice for polluting local streams.
On Monday, a judge sentenced Turhan Lapinig to one day in jail and 500 hours of community service for throwing garbage into the Ulehawa Stream, which KHON2 first reported last June.
Concerned residents called Action Line to see if anything could be done.
"Had confidence to contact KHON, the Action Line, and the action of our local media indicated also a commitment to taking care of our beaches and the environment," Judge Michael Wilson said.
With help from Action Line, Honolulu police arrested Lapinig for illegal water pollution.
