The Greg McMackin era came to a close Monday.  After four seasons, the UH football coach retired with a year remaining on his contract.

The 66-year-old McMackin was due to earn $1.1 million in the final season of his five-year deal, but is accepting a $600,000 buyout as part of a negotiated agreement.

McMackin announced his resignation at a press conference late Monday afternoon.

The man known affectionately as "Mack" took over the program in 2008, following the departure of June Jones, for whom he had served as a defensive coordinator in '99 and ‘07.

He now steps down after accumulating a 29-and-25 record through four years which included two appearances in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, both losses, and a share of the WAC championship in 2010, just the 4th in program history.

But a 6-and-7 effort in a season where Hawaii was predicted to repeat as WAC champs, forced him to take notice of the writing on the wall.

UH athletics director Jim Donovan said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

Associate head coach Rich Miano, who is expected to be a candidate for the vacancy, has been named the interim head coach.

Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw wanted to say mahalo to McMackin.

He entered the position shortly after she arrived at UH.

The chancellor also praised McMackin for his emphasis on academics … making sure the student athletes graduate.

She said McMackin is the only football coach she knows of who came to graduation dressed in gown.

AntiClause thats a real bonehead statement. First, Moniz has broke a lot of Timmy's and Colt's records. Second, Graves is a pretty decent QB. He's young and has great footwork and a decent arm. Third, we dont know the inside story so to say Mack abandon the team cuz they have no talent is just plain stupid. The way it seems is he got "forced" into retirement. UH atheletics are as shady as HPD.

Funny, after Moniz graduates, they really have no talent lined up to replace him. Moniz wasn't "all that", he was simply a decent player with a decent arm that could scramble when he had to. He was NOT a Timmy Chang or Colt Brennan caliber player, and will never make it past his days at UH. Havind said that, Mack is bailing on the University, as he KNOWS that they do not have the talent to succeed in the next few years. He'll pass the team onto another coach, that will take all of the heat from the team's failure in the years to come... Just like a rat jumping off a sinking ship!!! For all the millions he gets paid, I would have hung around another couple years and padded my retirement a little more!

June Jones was the man who got UH to it's first ever BCS bowl game, but UH lost JJ and McMack lead our team back to pre JJ era. JJ could make a weak team into conference Champs! SMU is proven proof. JJ is the man! It'll be very very impossible for UH to ever make it to another BCS bowl game. Good luck trying to find a coach like June Jones.

LOL! An opinion is like an okole and elbows, everyone (including myself) has one! What I am most disappointed in is how can anyone be or express loyalty to an administration that in 1 year's time force retires its coach...HERO (last year WAC champion) to ZERO. I hope Donovan and his cronies receive more compassion during "challenging" times, than was shown to Coach Mac. I will hold them to the same standard. Donavan just showed he has a long way to go to be on the same status of Stan Sheriff or Hugh Yoshida. Stick up for the coach! I don't think he was the best UH coach or the worst..he was in the middle. For all the Mac haters, its easy to coach from the couch. Coach Mac wasn't perfect, but football is a team sport. The failures of the team are the responsibility of its coach, staff, administration, and players. In the end, Mac should've be allowed to coach his final year. What signal is being sent as UH football ushers in the MWC era? Thanks Coach for making UH football not just about the all mighty dollar.

So UH is saving $500,000 with McMackin retiring. Maybe they can hire an interim coach for that amount and give someone a nice high-three state retirement. Just kidding. But looking forward, are the same people who made the totally akamai decision to hire McMackin four years ago going to be on the blue ribbon panel which will pick the new coach? No kidding.

UH administrators should work harder to improve higher education in Hawaii and less time micormanaging the football program. Coach Mac's record in footbal is better than the UH administrators record of improving higher education at an affordable tuition. Coach Mac is right, education should come before football. It is too bad that our UH regents and administrators do not seem to agree with that.

McMackin is responsible for the final outcome, but his assistants are a part of what he is and what he has accomplished. It seems head coach changes are not resolving the problem. I think what is lacking is a commitment the University of Hawaii need to do to meet expectation of the UH fans. If you want big time football look at what it takes to be in that league. Until we get serious, we will only wish we were.

I totally agree with Unclepauly. Some of you should remember where we came from...remember the 90's??? Coach Mac is not only a players and peoples people but he is genuinely hawaiian at heart...June Joans handed Mac an ailing football team having the best of talent during his reign and ditching Hawaii at the right time and Mac was noble enough to take on the challenge. Now lets show our aloha and stop being mean and sarcastic Makikiwarrior, your ignorance stinks!!!!

I think it was time for Coach Mac to leave and I'm glad he did on his own accord. He is a good guy and player's coach but you need to win to remain as coach. It would be nice if the new head coach keeps him as the defensive coordinator cause that's Coach Mac's forte. Aloha Coach Mac.
