You would think, as a teacher, the last thing you would want in your classroom is a video game.
These students at Waipahu High School are competing in a series of video algebra games created by Dimension M. Math teacher Amelia Cook couldn't be happier.
"The one thing different about Dimension M. is that it's not violent. They get to goop each other, but they do not kill each other and the only way to win the game is to solve the problem correctly," said Waipahu math teacher Amelia Cook.
That's the key - competition. The student teams take each other on, searching for clues and CORRECT answers.
"They love competition and that's what makes it so interesting to them as it's not only a video game, but also challenging math homework," said Waipahu freshman Saige Dacuycuy.
Using the video game to help with math instruction was, if you'll pardon the expression, a no-brainer for teacher Amelia Cook.
"We live in an age where technology is one of their number one things. They have cell phones, they have ipods, they have mp3 players and they have video games at home," Cook said.
Fight fire with fire. This is just one of the games created by Dimension M. and if the company needs a representative, it need look no further than Amelia Cook's daughter.
"So this game really helps you in math, science, history, literacy. It helps you all around so this is the one game that I think students and teachers will love to play," said Waipahu freshman Abcdee Cook.
