A famous documentary filmmaker who spent part of his life in Hawaii died in a helicopter crash in Australia today.
According to the Santa Barbara Independent, Mike deGruy was working on an upcoming project and that the crash happened during take-off on the New South Wales Coast.
According to his website, deGruy moved to Hawaii in the 1970s, entered a PhD Marine Biology program at UH, and worked at the Waikiki Aquarium.
DeGruy eventually went on to become an underwater filmmaker, traveling the world.
He was 60 years old.
