UPDATE:  The tsunami warning for Hawaii was cancelled at 1:38 p.m. by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for the State of Hawaii effective 12:46 a.m.

A tsunami warning means that a destructive wave, or waves, may have been generated by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chile at 8:34 p.m. HST on Friday.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center estimates the first wave arrival time in Hawaii will be at about 11:19 a.m. today, Saturday, February 27, at Hilo

Outdoor siren systems in each county will sound simultaneously at 6:00 a.m. to alert residents and visitors to evacuate coastal areas.

Residents will be advised by their respective county civil defense or emergency management agencies to evacuate coastal areas.

Residents are urged to follow civil defense instructions.

To determine whether or not you live or work in an evacuation zone, go to www.scd.hawaii.gov and enter your address in the Tsunami Evacuation Zone Mapping Tool, or check the Disaster Preparedness Guide in the front of your telephone directory.

I live in Minnesota, I'm glad to see and hear that no major damage occured this time. It sure was nice to see and hear the the City and County departments did take this seriously even though no major tsunami hit the islands. I have family and friends in Hawai'i Nei and all is safe with all. It was awesome to see the surges in Hilo Bay by the camera from KHON. I watched the entire live feed on Hawaii News Now all day. I commend Hawaii News Now staff for the fantastic coverage done during the entire tsnami warning. It was great to see that the City and County of Honolulu did a better job this time arround of getting the streets clear of residents and tourist in Waikiki than they did in the past. It was funny to see all of the local people drive up to Tantalus/Round Top drive to ge a look at the possible tsunami. What can you see from Tantalus/Round Top drive, besides sit up there and get a get sun tan and cause a considerable traffic jam getting to and from that part of town. One good consulation, it was great to see local footage of home when it's still winter and 28 degrees outside. Aloha, Hawaii No Ka Oi.

I heard the Islands were hit with 3 foot waves for almost 10 minutes. What can we do to help Hawaii get back to normal? Obama needs to send them as much money as possible. Perhaps all the singers on the mainland could do a song for them.

I'm wondering why you aren't showing footage from the camera (web cam, is it called?) that is atop the building on Waianuenue and Kam ave. The same building that holds the Tsunami Museum. THC cannibs ministry used to have a continual picture from that cab, but don't seem to have it now. The one you have is behind the break wall which was built to stop any tsumani, while that waianuenue web cam points right face on to Hilo bay where any wave rolls right toward the cam. Maybe you know how to find it> Aloha, Louise

Classic Hawaiian...Tsunami warning? Go to da beach. My Gram told meabout this a long time ago, and, I hate to say it, I'm glad to see that nothing has changed.

I find it disturbing to see people rushing out to drive to get gas, emergency supplies when they should already have these items. Creating traffic. The hard part to digest is that some drivers on the road, slow down to watch the ocean come in and go out while driving. They want to see a tsunami and the residing waters. I had no choice and got caught in this situation while driving home from Work. I just wanted to get away from there.
