UPDATE: Most Facilities to Remain Closed

UPDATE:

        Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced that many City facilities that were closed due to today’s Tsunami Warning will remain closed now that the danger has passed.

        Water restrictions have now been lifted, he said.

        “We greatly appreciate the public’s cooperation during this emergency,” Caldwell said. “We were prepared for the worst, while hoping for the best. By working together, we were very effective at protecting public safety.”

·         Golf courses will remain closed.

·         City parks will be open, but facilities such as gymnasiums within the parks will remain closed.

·         The Honolulu Zoo will remain closed.

·         Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve will remain closed.

·         Satellite City Halls will remain closed except for at Pearl Ridge Shopping Center and Windward City Shopping Center.

·         Lifeguards will staff beaches as normal.

·         TheBus will return to a normal Saturday schedule.

·         Evacuation buses that transported people to assembly areas will return them to pickup points.

·         The state high school wrestling championship event at the Blaisdell Arena has been postponed until tomorrow.

·         The Hawaii Ocean Expo 2010 is taking place today as scheduled.

“Today’s response was an excellent example of officials and the public working together for the common good,” Caldwell said.

  • Aloha Aina Recycling event at the Mililani Park and Ride Recycling Event

  • Operating Engineers Driver's Improvement class at Kahuku

  • The Oahu Interscholastic Association says they are cancelling all OIA events for today

  • The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has cancelled today's Sanctuary Ocean Count project due to the tsunami warning

  • All ILH sporting events postponed and Kamehameha and Honokaa boys basketball playoff at Honokaa

  • Girls Scout Woman in Construction "Miss Fix It Day"

  • Hawaii Pacific University events

  • Honolulu Dance Studio

  • Puhakea Elementary School closed

  • Boys and Girls Club

  • Interscholastic League of Honolulu

  • Kamehameha State Basketball playoffs

  • Maui District History Day Fair

  • Engineering Day at Waipahu Intermediate School

  • Kaiser High School speech tournament

  • 2010 Kimono Combat at Pearl City High School

  • Big Island All-Star game events for the high school girls

  • Dinosaur Volleyball Tournament at Queen's Beach (postponed until tomorrow)

  • National Public Radio concert with Chris Yeaton and Adam Werner (will be rescheduled)

  • HNL 2010 Conference; all sessions rescheduled for 6 PM - please check the website

  • Hanahauoli School's Malama na Keiki Dinner auction at the Hawaii Convention Center (postponed until further notice)

  • Honolulu Police Federal Credit Union Annual Dinner; it is rescheduled for March 6th, same time and place

  • All beach parks on base and the Klipper Golf Course will remain closed the remainder of the day.

Events to Go On As Scheduled/Places to Reopen

  • University of Hawaii campuses statewide have resumed normal operations after cancelling at 1:38 p.m.
  • City Lifeguards will return to all beaches with the exception of Hanauma Bay.
  • Whole Foods Market Kāhala is open again for business. The Kahului store is set to reopen again by 4 p.m.

  • The Hawaii Tourism Authority says all hotels and other visitor-related facilities are open and operating normally. 

  • Honolulu Heart Ball for Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel Ballroom

  • All General Growth Properties' Hawaii malls including:
    -Oahu: Ala Moana Center (reopening at 2:30 p.m.), Ward Centers (open until 8:00 p.m.), Windward Mall
    -Maui: Queen Ka`ahumanu Center (reopening at 3:00 p.m.), Whalers Village (open until10:00 p.m.)
    -Big Island: Kings’ Shops (open until 9:30 p.m.), Prince Kuhio Plaza

  • Pride of America will dock in Honolulu around 3 p.m. Guests embarking on Saturday's cruise should arrive at the pier between 5 and 7 p.m. The ship will depart as scheduled for its seven-day inter-island cruise.

  • The Ford Island Bridge has reopened, and the Fleet and Family Support Center has stood down its family assistance center.    
  • The fashion gala at INDIGO is still on tonight at 5 p.m. on 1121 Nuuanu Avenue. 
  • The 'Iolani School production of Cole Porter's musical Kiss Me, Kate will be performed as scheduled Saturday night at Hawaii Theatre downtown at 7 p.m.

Sam's Club Keeaumoku is open to general public, no membership needed to purchase goods. Sam's Club Pearl City gas station has 24 pumps and are all open, need to verify if you need membership to purchase though.
