We hear about military service members getting killed while fighting for our country, but rarely do we ever hear about how it affects their kids.

There's something going on this weekend that helps military kids deal with the loss of their parents.

Monica Williams and her big sis Mya lost their dad eight years ago.

"I only had a short time to be with him, but the years I was with him was really fun and I just want to say he was the best daddy," Mya says.

Their dad, Schofield Army Sergeant Eugene Williams, was one of four soldiers killed in Iraq when a suicide bomber posing as a taxi driver pulled up to a road block and ignited explosives.

That was March 2003.

Mya was only three at the time and Monica was in her mom's womb.

The girls and their mom Brandy have been attending summer camp at Camp Erdman since Friday.

"It's important for me for the girls to be with other survivors too, especially kids going through the same thing. Sometimes it's hard for them to talk to me, but I think it's easier for them to be around their peers," Brandy said.

It's all part of the Military Kids Family camp, which also helps children of wounded warriors.

Most of the costs are paid for by Operation Military Kids.

"This camp is helping us because we get to share our feelings," Mya says.

Overall, it's just a time for kids to just be kids and have fun.

"We went to the alpine today, the alpine tower. It was really fun. I made it all the way to the top twice on the easy one and the hard one, the hard one was really hard though," Mya says.

Showing that kids can overcome obstacles big and small.

The military kids family camp runs through Sunday.
