Students at Washington Middle School moved their science lab outdoors today.

They spent the morning at Makiki Stream collecting and analyzing water samples.

Readings were taken for water temperature, clarity and pollutants like phosphates and nitrates.

City officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers organized the event to coincide with World Water Monitoring Day.

"It's all about getting involved knowing a little more about your neighborhood about your local stream and how it impacts all the people down the stream," said Iwalani Sato of the Department of Environmental Services.

The students uploaded their data to the world water monitoring website, where they can view the results of their work and compare it with the findings of other students around the world.
