Many of these robotics competitions are part rock concert, part athletic event. And while most people get to see the competition part of the event, you might not appreciate everything that goes into getting there."So some of my best friends, the people I consider my sisters, don't like the things that I do," said Richel Cole, "but we work so well together because we can bring different things to the table."
Richel just graduated from Sacred Hearts, a school with an award winning robotics program. It's the statewide success by a number of Hawaii programs that has led to this summer's series of camps and workshops, hoping to inspire young imaginations.
"And these might be students who have no robotic experience yet, but they're getting engaged," said Corrie Heck. "We want to get them excited about STEM, science, technology, engineering and math. To get them the skill sets they need to be successful in the 21st century."
"Robotics opens up a whole bunch of doors," said Cole. "And so whether you want to be an engineer, a business person, a doctor, a lawyer, whatever you want to do you can kind of get one step closer by joining robotics."
And at these camps, a win-win, young students teaching other students about the science of tomorrow.
"A lot of our students are leading the robotics efforts nationally and internationally," Heck said. "So by them mentoring their younger counterparts there really is a cross generation, exchange of ideas that is happening, which is really beneficial to everyone."
