Small businesses came together today to see what it takes to get get funding from the Department of Defense.

The small business innovation research conference gives local technology start-ups the opportunity to apply for federal grants to get their companies off the ground.

"Hawaii is a prime spot obviously for that because we do have a lot of defense companies, contracting companies here, and yet we are cut off from the mainland information," says Yuka Nagashima, High Tech Development Corporation.

Those who attended today are vying for grants from eleven federal agencies - who allocate more than $1.4 billion dollars every year to small businesses.
